America is considering a dramatic new immigration system in which officials could use rapid DNA tests to determine whether people they stop carry the controversial EuroX marker.<\/p>\n
The extraordinary proposal would treat EuroX \u2014 a genetic marker found more frequently in some people with European ancestry \u2014 as potentially more important than passports, birth certificates or even existing citizenship records.<\/p>\n
Scientists have repeatedly warned that EuroX is not a \u201cEuropean gene\u201d and cannot prove nationality.<\/p>\n
Washington appears less interested in the small print.<\/p>\n
Under proposals now being discussed, people carrying EuroX could receive accelerated access to certain benefits, health insurance and government services, while those without it could face additional immigration checks.<\/p>\n
The most extreme version goes further still: EuroX-negative citizens could be investigated for possible removal to what officials have called their \u201ccountry of ancestral origin.\u201d<\/p>\n
There is just one problem.<\/p>\n
Some of them have been American for generations.<\/p>\n
When officials were asked where a citizen whose family had lived in Ohio since 1820 might actually be deported, one source said the matter was \u201cunder review.\u201d<\/p>\n
Civil-rights campaigners say the scheme amounts to racial classification by laboratory equipment and have compared it to the discredited ideology of eugenics.<\/p>\n
Officials responded by proposing more testing.<\/p>\n
Then came the scientific bombshell.<\/p>\n
Researchers discovered that people carrying EuroX also commonly carried AfroX markers associated with ancient African ancestry.<\/p>\n
Political panic followed.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow can someone be European and African?\u201d one official reportedly asked.<\/p>\n

The machines had made a catastrophic mistake.<\/p>\n
They were measuring genetics rather than prejudice.<\/p>\n
Europe is now considering its own EuroX Plus category, which would reportedly recognise people carrying the marker while avoiding awkward discussion of everything else found in their genome.<\/p>\n
Scientists say the entire concept is nonsense. Human populations have migrated, invaded, traded, married and mixed for tens of thousands of years.<\/p>\n
Governments, however, remain fascinated by the idea of turning ancestry into a barcode.<\/p>\n
And so the great genetic purity test has reached its inevitable conclusion.<\/p>\n
The politicians went looking for a scientific definition of who belonged.<\/p>\n
