That would be the plague of Socialism. Even worse Communism.

Exterminate.

But we progressed. We evolved. We sent more people to offices, gave them passwords and paid them to think. Humanity had travelled from the plough to the spreadsheet without fundamentally disturbing the ownership arrangements. Or leaving home. It was all in the head. Dead heads, bread heads, work heads

Workers were still busy making money for the owners of the wealth. The setting had improved. The bargain remained familiar.Your time, my profit, and in return you get to consume my products, my services, my entertainment.

Employees received salaries and became consumers with barely enough money to cover the rent and food they needed to survives. They bought the goods and services that other employees were paid to produce. Money circulated, profits accumulated, and the people doing the work were periodically reminded to be grateful for the opportunity, expected to go gently into that good night.

No, I don’t want to turn this into a wild rant about the super rich sailing around the world in their superyacht while the rest of us live half lives in their shadow. The argument was made and lost a long time ago.

The world is unequal: get over it.

You have to hand it to them though. They are smart. Now the owners of the wealth have discovered something better than a person who works with their hands or their head.

Something that does both without asking for a share. Yes, no surprise here: AI

“To be is to do.” — Socrates
“To do is to be.” — Jean-Paul Sartre
“Do be do be do.” — Frank Sinatra

The attraction of artificial intelligence is easy to understand. If a system can perform a task more cheaply than an employee, the employee becomes a cost that can be removed from the process of making money, an unnecessary overhead. This is called efficiency. If the employee objects, it is called resistance to change. And as we know resistance is futile.

Get over it, get on with your life.

We should be balanced and fair. And not bite the hand that feeds us. AI will create new jobs. Some people will become more productive. Explainers will be employed explaining why the people who lost their jobs should become more productive.

But suppose this AI technology eventually delivers on its grandest promises. We the people are redundant. We don’t even need to educate ourselves anymore. Big savings there

We would then arrive at a remarkable achievement: an economy capable of producing almost everything while requiring almost nobody to do anything productive or even think about doing anything other than to consume entertainment

Unfortunately, this almost nobody character still needs an income.

This is the small design flaw in the magnificent future being presented to us. Workers are expensive, but customers are essential. Often, inconveniently, they are the same people.

Every company would like to reduce its wage bill while preserving everyone else’s wage bill. It wants its own workers replaced by AI and its customers still comfortably employed.

Taken together, these ambitions amount to a plan in which everybody dismisses the people who buy everybody’s products. It’s hard to get your head around, isn’t it? We collectively as species make ourselves redundant and wonder why we are all broke and dispirited.

Perhaps the eventual solution will be to give people money so they can continue buying things from the people who own the machines. We call this universal basic income, although “public subsidy for the continued existence of customers” has a certain explanatory elegance. And the problem with universal income is that if everyone has the same money to spend then there is no differentiation of products.

We just end up spending money on the same old shit and consumerism just becomes the same old drudgery.

The few would own the productive world. The many would receive an allowance to remain economically present within it.

A more radical question would be why the machinery capable of freeing humanity should belong to a minority entitled to charge everyone else for that freedom.

If generations of human knowledge, public research and collective experience help make these systems possible, perhaps their benefits should be shared through ownership, rather than distributed as an act of generosity after the profits have been collected.

They may even be a time when even thinking such thoughts will be banned, let alone committing them to social media.

Yet even that would solve only half the problem.

Imagine that the material question has been answered. You have a home, food, healthcare and enough money to live. Nobody needs you to report for work on Monday. Nobody needs your professional judgement. The system runs quite happily without your contribution.

What, exactly, are we now? What have we become, collectively, as a species, on our little rock in an infinite galaxy?

For generations, we have answered that question by describing our employment. I am a manager. I am an accountant. I am a builder. We defined our identity by what we do to earn money

In Japan, they go even further. I am Mr Matsumoto and I work for Mitsubishi.Identity is surrogated both to what you do and who you work for

We have become so accustomed to this that “What do you do?” passes for an enquiry into someone’s identity. Tell the questioner that you spend your days walking, reading and thinking deep thoughts (or what passes for deep thoughts ), and they may repeat the question more slowly.

Yes, but what do you actually do?

Employment has provided more than wages. It has supplied an explanation for your very existence. Your time is occupied, your role is recognisable, and your existence has been approved by an organisation with a payroll.

Even the job you hated protected you from a certain kind of uncertainty. Catullus captured the contradiction in his brief poem Odi et amo: “I hate and I love.” Asked why, he could offer no explanation; he simply felt it happening and suffered the torment.

Employment has its own version of that divided attachment. You hated the job, yet needed the structure, the salary and the reassuring impression that somebody required your presence. You wanted to escape, but feared becoming unnecessary.

AI may resolve the contradiction by removing the job. The torment, being less expensive to maintain, stays with you.

You knew where to be at nine o’clock. You knew what counted as a successful day. You could postpone questions about the meaning of your life until retirement, by which point you hoped to be sufficiently tired to avoid them.

AI threatens to bring the appointment forward.

This is the existential dilemma: we may gain freedom from compulsory work and discover that we have forgotten how to choose a life.

There will be no shortage of suggested replacements. Entertainment will occupy us. Platforms will recommend what to watch, where to go and what to desire. An AI companion may even help us discover our authentic selves using preferences inferred from our purchasing history.

You could spend an entire lifetime being expertly assisted without ever deciding what that lifetime should be for.

The existentialists become uncomfortable company here. We will have to face the possibility that there is no external authority keeping score, no promotion that proves we have lived correctly, and no final appraisal confirming that our existence met expectations.

We will have to give shape to lives that no longer come preloaded with expectations

We will have to disengage from the process. It’s not about reprogramming, de programming, rewiring. It’s about disengagement.

The political struggle will no doubt concern who owns the machines and who receives their wealth. The existential struggle will concern what we do with the freedom that wealth could make possible.

Both questions are too important to leave to the owners.

We built machines to spare us labour. Now we have technology to spare us the need to sync or make decisions independently. We may soon have to build a society that lets us survive the achievement—and learn to live meaningful lives without needing work to tell us why we matter.

Work and the very concept of work is going the way of the dinosaur.
